You can’t be in two places at once
There are many barriers to committing to a program of change.
Don’t let location, transportation, or scheduling be one of them. There may be a job or family commitment that makes taking a month off or even attending a weekly session legitimately impossible.
“Program style” counseling that over-prioritizes structure and de-emphasizes “uniqueness” loses its flexibility and the ability to help you solve your particular problem.
Online counseling can mean the difference between settling for a local provider out of convenience or developing a relationship with a counselor who may be out of town but a better match for you as an individual.
About those excuses
Sometimes, even a real-life reason is going to start to sound like an excuse, especially if there is pressure from a spouse or employer.
At other times, we aren’t ready to tell our partner that we are seeking help, and “sneaking off for counseling or therapy” doesn’t feel right.
Using a secure and confidential way to communicate with me can eliminate a host of conflicts. No one needs to know “where you are going,” the time commitment decreases dramatically, and changing schedules can usually be accommodated.
Most importantly, perhaps, is that you are not limited to seeing a counselor within practical driving distance or on your way home from work.
Online counseling is not a complete replacement for in-office counseling, but it can certainly complement your sessions and provide additional support and flexibility.
Online counseling offers multiple benefits to users.
- Location: With online counseling, you are not limited in choice by your geographical location. You have the ability to connect with a counselor that’s not in your area.
- Schedule. If you’re working full-time, traveling, have childcare or transportation issues. With online counseling, you can receive help 24/7 (by arrangement) or while you are out of town.
- Communication: Online counseling enables you to access services and get help right away. This includes SMS/chat, video, and phone sessions.
- Stigmas: Although this is changing, there are still barriers due to negative associations with being treated for a substance use disorder. Accessing services online can help.
- Privacy/Confidentiality: Using secure online tools provides users with complete privacy and confidentiality. Counselors are bound by the same HIPAA and 42 CFR pt 2 regulations as we would be in office settings.
A combination of individual office visits and online sessions is likely to be recommended.
Who is eligible?
To use online counseling, you’ll need a reliable computer with a broadband Internet connection. In addition, voice and camera functions need to be functioning. We will use a conferencing provider that uses HIPAA-compliant software.
Most importantly, you’ll need to be in a secure location, free of distractions, that provides you with privacy and the ability to freely communicate.
When it’s not a good fit
We will meet in person first and include the option of online services as part of the initial assessment.
Even if seems like a good match at the start, it may become inadvisable to continue based on:
- Instability. Difficulty maintaining abstinence or attendance agreements will indicate the need for office sessions or even an increase in the level of care.
- Technical obstacles. As previously mentioned, online counseling is not effective without good Internet service and a safe place to talk.
- Lack of progress on treatment goals. If there is mutual agreement that your needs are better met in person, we will switch back to office visits.
